The old harbour with Boddelpoort / Bottelpoort and Hubertus mill. On February 5, 1881, the decision was taken to fill up the old harbour. This work was finished on August 1, 1884. The harbour used to be located where the labyrinth on the Waalkade is now. The Bottelpoort was a water gate meant to protect the city from the side of the Waal. When the harbour was constructed in 1601-1604, the Bottelpoort from 1540 lost its function. It was bricked up and became the house of the harbourmaster. The remains of this gate were preserved as part of a public garden until 1909, but had to make place for the tram depot.

Remains of the Boddelpoort on the Waalkade around 1900.
