Verwoestingen rondom de Broerstraat:

Toen deze foto werd genomen, waren de meeste ruïnes en steenhopen al opgeruimd. In het midden, aan de Broerstraat, staan de laatste resten van het warenhuis Van der Borg. Dit was overigens de eerste winkel die zijn deuren opende in het nieuwe stadscentrum dat zou verrijzen. Het warenhuis keerde op vrijwel dezelfde plaats terug.
Uiterst links staat de eind 19de-eeuwse kerktoren van Pierre Cuypers nog overeind. Rechts daarvan is de zuidvleugel van het stadhuis te zien. Dit bouwwerk uit 1940 overleefde de oorlog en werd rond 1980 gesloopt. Rechts tenslotte steekt de Mariënburgkapel nog uit boven de resten van een winkelpand.
Van de vele straten en steegjes die bij de wederopbouw verloren gingen, is er op deze ansicht (Helemaal vooraan, net iets links van het midden) één te zien: de Beynumsgas. De bebouwing eromheen is helaas helemaal verdwenen.

Destructions around the Broerstraat:

When this picture was taken, most of the ruins and heaps of bricks were already cleared. In the middle, in the Broerstraat, the last remains of the department store 'Van der Borg' can be seen. By the way, this was the first shop to open its doors in the new city centre which would be reconstructed. The department store returned almost exactly to this location.
To the far left, the church tower of Pierre Cuypers, from the end of the 19th century, is still standing upright. To the right of this, the south wing of the town hall can be seen. This building, dating from 1940, survived the war and was demolished around 1980. On the right of the picture, finally, the Mariënburg chapel still rises above the remains of a shop building. 
Of the many streets and alleyways which were lost in the reconstruction, this picture shows one (to the front, just to the left of the middle): the Beynumsgas. The buildings on either side of this alleyway have unfortunately disappeared completely.
