Lange Burchtstraat in puin:

Hier een blik op het oostelijke deel van de Lange Burchtstraat, in de richting van het Kelfkensbos. Dit deel van de binnenstad werd in september 1944 verwoest, toen vluchtende Duitse soldaten verschillende gebouwen in brand staken. De ruïne in het midden van de foto is van een woon-winkelcomplex dat kort voor het begin van de oorlog was opgeleverd. Tot in 1935 stond op deze plaats de Nijmeegse schouwburg.
Na de oorlog kon de Burchtstraat bijlangenaniet zijn vooroorlogse sfeer terugkrijgen, zoals vele andere straten in de stad.

Lange Burchtstraat in ruins:

This card shows the eastern part of the Lange Burchtstraat, looking in the direction of Kelfkensbos. This part of the inner city was destroyed in September 1944, when German soldiers on the run set fire to several buildings. The ruin in the middle of the picture is that of a building with houses and shops, which was built just before the beginning of the war. Until 1935, the theatre of Nijmegen was located here.
After the war, the Burchtstraat failed to regain its pre-war atmosphere, just like so many other streets in the town.
